1 Potato, 2 Potato, 3 Potato, 4...

We were luck enough to get invited, along with the rest of our little school community, to a local organic vegetable farm on the outskirts of Canberra. We were given the opportunity to come along and be part of the Potato Harvest. Hunting and digging for our own potatoes and more. Then if we wanted, we could purchase them for a measly $2kg which for local organic potatoes I think is pretty great :)

What a WONDERFUL experience it was... we have grown and harvested our own potatoes many times, but it was quite a different experience having a whole field brimming with potatoes ready to harvest. It was like a good ol' fashioned Easter egg hunt!

Over the allocated time troops of families turned up equip with gumboots, buckets, and a wide variety of gardening tools.

The children aged 6 weeks to 16 went straight to it and a chorus of "I found one!!" "WOW look at the size of this one!" "They're EVERYWHERE" "We'll be eating potatoes forever!!" rang out to the smiles of the adults.

It was such a great experience, all there getting filthy, squatting in the dirt and digging and chatting and celebrating our discoveries. All ages heads down, bums up hopping to find little nuggets of treasure.

A really great opportunity to build and strengthen community spirit, all the while in the hunt for good nourishing local produce.

Here are some photos of  my troop in the thick of it...
